The numbers of impressed sailors could be large, and the proportion grew steadily as the 18th century Royal Navy expanded. In the Seven Years War the evidence is that impressment was mainly used to top up numbers, with about a quarter of sailors being pressed. By the Napoleonic Wars this figure had risen to be over half. Naval historians also suspect that many of those listed as ‘volunteering’ may have done so to avoid the threat of impressment. Men who volunteered gained several useful advantages, including exemption from debt, a signing on bonus, and some say over which ship they would serve on.

The discoveries include a large number of fragments of Greek building ceramics, Roman tegulas and imbrexes (overlapping roof tiles used in ancient Greek and Roman architecture as a waterproof and durable roof covering), as well as some intact Late Antiquity tiles. During the underwater inspections, the diving team managed to collect from the seabed about 100 ceramic fragments, half a stone Greek anchor rod, a stone battle ball and several relatively well-preserved amphorae. At this stage of the underwater research, it is assumed that the site at the foot of Cape Chiroza covered an area of 2000 square metres, the statement said.

The purpose of maritime quarantine was to prevent disease from spreading. In the 14th century, governments began to understand that plagues were somehow being spread by sailors so they took steps to establish quarantine stations outside of cities where incoming vessels could be isolated and their men and cargos could be either proved healthy or quarantined before they and their goods were allowed into the city.

Fluyts were designed in the Netherlands and used as merchant ships in the 17th century. The ship was designed so that it could be sailed with a small crew, and so a lot of cargo could be carried."

Blackbeard Captures Two Prizes!
August 23, 1718: Blackbeard and his crew on the 'Adventure [II]' spy two French merchant ships, one fully laden and the other in ballast, sailing Northward from the Caribbean island of Martinique. The 'Rose Emelye,' loaded with bags of cocoa and barrels of refined sugar, is in the company of the unarmed 'La Toison d’Or.' Both are returning to France via the Gulf Stream. After a brief and futile fight, and some damage to Blackbeard's 'Adventure [II]' and his crew, the pirates take both prizes and set course for North Carolina with one of the fully laden ships. The French crewmen are sent on their way in the other merchant vessel. nautilusproductions.com/projects/queen-annes-revenge

Pirate Bonnet Heads For Carolina!
August 12, 1718: On this day in 1718, "Gentleman Pirate" Stede Bonnet's sloop-of-war flagship the 'Royal James' and two other armed sloops, the 'Francis' and the 'Fortune,' captured a shallop as they sailed from Delaware Bay into the Cape Fear River. The 'Royal James' was Blackbeard's former sloop and armed with eight cannon. The other two sloops were similarly armed. All together, 46 pirates crewed them. The 'Royal James' was badly in need of careening with hurricane season quickly approaching and Bonnet had chosen the Cape Fear estuary as a reliable shelter against storms. For the next few weeks, Bonnet's crew made repairs to the 'Royal James' with materials salvaged from the captured shallop. In the coming month, reports of Bonnet's presence in the region would make their way to South Carolina Governor Robert Johnson, prompting him to issue an order for Militia Colonel William Rhett to command an operation "to destroy the pirate threat." nautilusproductions.com/projects/queen-annes-revenge

Either during the First World War or after the conflict had ended, senior German naval officials believed that shortly after it was sunk, the Royal Navy had succeeded in obtaining secret papers from the wreck. The Germans believed that Royal Navy divers had entered the vessel and had recovered crucial intelligence information, including a detailed map of German minefields.

The sites presented in this online museum are located on the seabed off both Malta and Gozo. They reflect the various roles that the islands played throughout their history. Through the centuries the islands have borne witness to events such as the foundering of an archaic shipwreck, naval blockades, the impact of naval mines and intense aerial battles. We are proud to present sites that range from a 2,700 year old Phoenician shipwreck to First World War surface craft and, submarines and aircraft from the Second World War. The sites presented here also form part of various ongoing projects, such as the continued investigation and deep-water excavation of the Phoenician Shipwreck, and the recording and documentation of First and Second World War vessels and aircraft.

On July 31, 1715 at 2 a.m., the hurricane struck with all of its fury as the winds shifted to east-northeast. Six treasure galleons made up the body of the fleet riding low in the water from the weight of the gold and silver. Two more fighting galleons brought up the rear. Dozens of heavy bronze cannon were concealed behind their gun ports to protect the $14 million in gold and silver. As the storm hit Ubilla and Echeverz shouted commands that couldn’t be heard by everyone. The last remaining sails were taken down; some captains tried to anchor as others took cover. The anchors failed to hold, and the ships’ hulls were shredded on the jagged reefs. On deck, no man could breathe the suffocating mixture of wind and water. In the blackness of night and storm, water poured into the holds. The priests on board gave last rites and the passengers offered confessions. For those washed overboard there was little hope. The seas picked up the massive galleons and flung them time and again against the first reef, then the second reef. Another round of waves turned the galleons on their sides or upside down as they tumbled toward the shore.

The ship's plentiful cargo included 103 amphorae filled with all forms of agricultural products, numerous daily objects used by the crew and many other unique features, such as several Greek and Arabic inscriptions. They were swallowed by the sea and the sand, which preserved their secrets for centuries. Among the products found in the pottery were olives, dates, figs, fish bones, pine nuts, grapes and raisins. What also makes the site unique is that among the six types of amphorae identified by the archaeologists, two typologies had never emerged anywhere else. It has offered archaeologists unique insights into the life of the region at the time of the transition between Byzantine and Islamic rule, trade routes and ship construction.

Blackbeard may have intended to run his pirate ship aground off the North Carolina coast, new research suggests. Clues from the 300-year-old Queen Anne’s Revenge shipwreck indicate there was likely a “major leak” onboard. “The grounding of QAR may therefore represent a premeditated move by Blackbeard to rid himself of a ship that he felt was no longer serviceable.” In 1718, the ship went onto sandbar near Beaufort, North Carolina. Footage provided by Nautilus Productions LLC.

Blackbeard & Hornigold East of Cuba!
July 1717: Pirates Benjamin Hornigold on board his 30 gun sloop Bonnett, and his second in command Edward Thache on another sloop are sailing in the waters East of Cuba. They seize two merchant ships in quick succession. One sailing for New York from Havana is carrying 120 barrels of flour, a commodity much in demand in the Bahamas. About a week later they capture another sloop from Jamaica headed for New York with a cargo of rum which the pirates liberate from their prey. The pirate crews then sail for Nassau in early August and offload their booty. nautilusproductions.com/projects/queen-annes-revenge.

The trail ends at a beach overlooking Teach’s Hole, an area of the Pamlico Sound where Edward Teach, or Blackbeard, was killed in a battle with Lt. Robert Maynard in November 1718. Two months earlier, Blackbeard held a large gathering with other pirates such as Calico Jack Rackham and Charles Vane, according to local historian Philip Howard. For days, the pirates drank rum and ate roasted pig as they partied and parlayed.

The pirates were predominantly made up of English men, but Irish, French, renegade Dutch, North African and other nationalities were also among their number. They transferred their base of operations from the West Country in England to coastal southwest Munster from 1603 onwards when the new king, James I, clamped down on piracy in England and the ports and harbours used by them.

A Slave Ship Arrives in Port!
June 27, 1717: 'La Concorde' arrives at the trading port of Juida (or Whydah), present-day Ouidah, Benin. During the next several weeks, the crew trades the goods they brought with them from Europe for 516 slaves and 14 ounces of gold dust. This gold dust would later be found on wreck site of the 'Queen Anne's Revenge.' It is estimated that more than half of the entire slave trade took place during the 18th century, with the British, Portuguese and French being the main carriers of nine out of ten slaves abducted in Africa. Around 2.2 million Africans died during the Middle Passage where they were packed into tight, unsanitary spaces on ships for months at a time. Measures were taken to stem the onboard mortality rate, such as enforced "dancing" (as exercise) above deck and the practice of force-feeding enslaved persons who tried to starve themselves. The conditions on board also resulted in the spread of fatal diseases and the suicides of the slaves who escaped by jumping overboard. Slave traders would try to fit anywhere from 350 to 600 slaves on one ship. Before the African slave trade was completely banned by participating nations in 1853, 15.3 million enslaved people had been transported to the Americas.
