Tis a PYRATE with papers - tis what it tis - ladWhat, exactly, is a privateer?

Fair question. A lot has changed in 200 years. In 1812, however, everyone knew that a ‘privateer’ was nothing more than a privately-owned vessel — sometimes built expressly for privateering, but more often converted from fishing or trading — which applied for a government permit in wartime to go out and capture enemy vessels.

43 different vessels sailed from Salem during the War of 1812 as privateers: everything from full-rigged ships to tiny sloops and luggers. Over half of them were either captured by the British or wrecked.

Fame was a small schooner, only about 70 feet overall, but she was big enough to carry two small cannon and a crew of 30. Although originally intended for fishing, she became a successful privateer. She was one of the very first American privateers to get to sea, and the first to send home a “prize” or captured vessel. She took over 20 prizes that we know of, while avoiding capture herself for nearly two years.

Every Ship Needs Love and Attention.... Victory Chimes is no exception. Enjoy the buff and wax old girl, and BEWARE OF PIRATES upon your return to the bounding main! #PiratedirectoryIt's not easy hauling a boat the size of Victory Chimes. But she's out of the water for the first time in a few years and there'll be round-the-clock workers attending to her top and bottom! #Thisiswindjamming, #VictoryChimes ... See MoreSee Less

Pirates needed for Mermaid Wranglers for upcoming event! ~ The Mermaid Olympic Games are being held July 26-28, 2019, in Colorado Springs, Colorado ~ presented by the Mermaids Lagoon, and hosted by King Neptune. There, pods will be represented by mermaids and mermen who will test their aquatic skills through a series of specially designed mermaid games. Mers will compete for Mermaid Olympic Games medals and the bragging rights that go with them. Medals will be awarded in several categories. The Mers in the first Mermaid Olympics were very competitive and played hard for the medals. All of the participants swam away with memories that will last a life time. We are thrilled with the enthusiasm exhibited by the Mer Folk! ~ www.facebook.com/events/290607995184569/ ... See MoreSee Less
