Graybeard : (gr bîrd ) noun 1) an sage of advanced years,
2) A rolling wave on a dark sea, 3) A container for alcohol
Graybeard, the Ancient Mariner, is a Survivor of the Days of Piracy.
He survived by being voted ON the island (to the curses of pirates, shouting “What a Maroon!)
He survived by eating rats, known as “millers” by sailors back in the day, since the rats infested the flour barrels aboard ship, which lead to the phrase “It’s Miller Time”!

Graybeard, the Ancient Mariner, sings songs and talks about his life as a sailor.
Like the Ancient Mariner of the Coleridge poem, Graybeard is a wizened mariner wandering the world recounting his stories. Graybeard carries a treasure chest full of maritime artifacts to stimulate questions
and gives honest, historical answers to what lubbers want to know about his life at sea.
Graybeard’s modern counterpart, David HB Drake, is a professional folksinger and real-life sailor.
David presents “shanties” and “fo’castle” sailor songs, sing-alongs and stories about ships, the sea, the Great Lakes, and even the occasional pirate. He performs on guitar, banjo, concertina, dulcimer and Native American flute.

David has served as the shantyman and educator for many tall ships including the HMS Bounty, Clearwater, and is currently shantyman/historian for the schooner Denis Sullivan in the Port of Milwaukee. He is the skipper of the sloop “Concertina”. He has performed at seaside festivals and events across the country and his “Fisherman’s Beach” CD presents his original songs of the Great Lakes and freshwater northland.
