Pirate_Directory_Krewe_of_Bowlegs_00003The Krewe of Bowlegs was started in 1955 to promote tourism on the Emerald Coast. William Augustus Bowles (aka, Billy Bowlegs) is the patron pirate of the krewe.

The members of this male only organization are civic leaders that wanted to promote the area, but also wanted a social outlet without being encumbered by raising money and asking for donations. The Krewe is truly an adult fraternity of 170 members that care for each other, participate in many civic organizations and help preserve the pirate heritage of the Emerald Coast, while encouraging tourism to the area. Each year a new Captain Billy Bowlegs is chosen by the past 7 Billys. The new Captain picks his Queen and his First Mate and Mistress along with 10 couples that form the Honor Guard. Captain Billy is also the President of the Board, which he also chooses each year. The reign of the Captain is from mid-June to mid June. He is chosen in December and has six months to organize his Krewe for the year.

Pirate_Directory_Krewe_of_Bowlegs_00006The year culminates in the Billy Bowlegs festival that is put on by the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber in close coordination with the Krewe. Without the Krewe, the festival would not be possible. The festival, rated by Southern Living Magazine, is one of the top festivals in the Southeast. It draws in about 30,000 people for the two day festival the first weekend in June. The following weekend, the second Saturday in June, the new Captain Billy Bowlegs is crowned in a lavish coronation ceremony held at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College. The coronation is followed by a black tie ball to celebrate the new Captain. First Mate and First Mistress and the Honor Guard.

The Krewe is in its 61st year. We are a band of hardworking pirates and wenches, over the next year as we parade and promote tourism throughout the land and sea, with this year’s theme; “BOMBS AWAY!”.  We’ll celebrate here in the local area throughout the year, and we’ll hit the road and band together with reciprocal sister Krewe’s in Panama City, Apalachicola, Pensacola, Tallahassee, Minneapolis, MN, and Bradenton FL, and we’ll return for a final battle each June right here in Fort Walton Beach to conquer the local militia, capture the Mayor of Fort Walton Beach, and take over the city to kickoff a huge pirate festival weekend!

It’s very important for the Krewe of Bowlegs to be strong supporters of our community.  We are made up of talented leaders, professionals and energetic people from all over the area. We look forward to seeing you throughout the year, and especially at the 2016 Billy Bowlegs Festival in June (www.billybowlegsfestival.com) as we celebrate this year of fun and piracy.

So sad to see this cancelled but Another one bites the COVID19 dust. See ya next year😷💀Stay safe out there pirates! In an effort to ensure the health and safety of our community and visitors, the Krewe of Bowlegs and the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival and Torchlight Parade due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns.
The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival and Torchlight Parade is one of the most anticipated events in the area. In May the event was rescheduled from the traditional first weekend in June to Friday, July 31st and Saturday, August 1st with the Torchlight Parade on Monday, August 3rd in the hopes of being able to continue this Fort Walton Beach tradition. Unfortunately it became increasingly clear that hosting this event would pose a health and safety risk to attendees, volunteers, vendors, staff, visitors and the community as a whole.
"While this was a difficult decision, it was one made collectively and responsibly. Ensuring the well-being of our community is our top priority.” Ted Corcoran, President/CEO Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce.
We look forward to welcoming the 66th Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival in 2021.
